The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha election results, asserting that he is no longer acceptable to opposition allies. The BJP’s charge came after the INDIA bloc suffered a setback in the biennial polls, with the ruling coalition securing both seats.
BJP’s Allegations
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi’s leadership is being rejected not just by voters but also by his own alliance partners. The Jharkhand result proves that the INDIA bloc is crumbling.” Patra alleged that internal discord within the opposition alliance is weakening its unity, making it ineffective against the NDA.
Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Outcome
In the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections, the NDA candidates won both seats, dealing a blow to the opposition INDIA bloc. The Congress-JMM alliance had hoped to secure at least one seat but failed due to cross-voting and lack of support from allies. The BJP claimed this reflects the declining influence of Rahul Gandhi in coalition politics.
INDIA Bloc’s Response
Opposition leaders downplayed the defeat, citing local factors and organizational issues. However, the BJP continued its offensive, with leaders stating that Rahul Gandhi’s “arrogance” is alienating partners. “The Congress must introspect if they want to lead the opposition,” Patra added.
Political Implications
Political analysts view the Jharkhand result as a significant setback for the INDIA bloc ahead of upcoming state elections. The BJP’s strategy to target Rahul Gandhi personally aims to deepen fissures within the opposition. With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in focus, the ruling party is keen to project the opposition as fragmented.
The Congress party dismissed the BJP’s claims, calling them “baseless.” Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, “The INDIA bloc is united and will contest all elections together. The Jharkhand result is just a temporary setback.”
