BJP Defends Fuel Price Hike, Cites Smaller Rise

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday pushed back against criticism over the rise in fuel prices, asserting that India had implemented the smallest increase among major economies. The party highlighted that the government successfully shielded consumers from global volatility following the outbreak of the West Asia conflict, before rolling out a calibrated hike.

Impact on Inflation and Economy

"This matters because fuel prices do not remain confined to petrol pumps. They affect transport costs, food inflation, manufacturing, logistics and household budgets. Containing fuel volatility is also about containing inflation," the BJP stated, suggesting that the relatively small increase would not seriously impact inflation.

Comparative Analysis with Other Nations

BJP's Amit Malviya pointed out that the 3.2% increase in petrol price and 3.4% rise in diesel rate came even as major economies witnessed much higher jumps in fuel prices. For instance, the rise in petrol price was 44.5% in the United States, 9.7% in Japan, and 19.2% in the United Kingdom. He listed similar higher increases in other nations as well, emphasizing India's relatively restrained approach.

The party's defense comes amid widespread public concern over rising fuel costs and their potential ripple effects on the broader economy. By citing international comparisons, the BJP aims to justify the modest hike and reassure citizens that the government is managing fuel prices responsibly.
