The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for his recent remarks criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign visits. The ruling party at the Centre termed Mann's statement as 'irresponsible' and 'lacking in diplomatic understanding'.
BJP's Strong Response
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar accused Mann of making 'frivolous' comments that undermine India's global standing. 'The Chief Minister's statement reflects his ignorance of international relations and the importance of foreign diplomacy. PM Modi's visits have strengthened India's ties with key nations and attracted investments,' Jakhar said.
Jakhar further alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has failed to address critical issues like law and order, drug menace, and unemployment. 'Instead of focusing on governance, Mann is busy making baseless statements against the Prime Minister,' he added.
Mann's Controversial Statement
Earlier, Bhagwant Mann had questioned the frequency of PM Modi's foreign tours, suggesting that the Prime Minister should prioritize domestic issues. 'While the people of India are facing inflation and unemployment, Modi is busy traveling abroad,' Mann had said at a public rally.
The BJP dismissed this as a 'cheap political stunt' and pointed out that Mann himself had undertaken foreign trips after becoming Chief Minister. 'He should look at his own travel record before criticizing the Prime Minister,' Jakhar remarked.
Political Reactions
The controversy has sparked a war of words between the BJP and AAP. While AAP leaders defended Mann, stating that he was highlighting the concerns of common people, the BJP accused him of 'anti-national' behavior.
Political analysts believe that the issue could escalate ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with both parties using it to consolidate their voter bases. The BJP is expected to continue targeting Mann over his remarks, while AAP may try to project him as a leader who speaks truth to power.
Meanwhile, the Congress party also criticized Mann, saying that his statement was 'ill-timed' and 'damaging' to India's image abroad. 'Such comments from a Chief Minister are unfortunate and show his lack of maturity,' said Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Implications for Punjab Politics
The incident has further strained relations between the state government and the Centre. With Punjab facing several challenges, including the ongoing farmers' protest and border security issues, the political slugfest is likely to divert attention from governance.
The BJP's strong reaction indicates that it will not let Mann's statement go unnoticed, potentially using it as a campaign issue in the upcoming elections. As the political temperature rises, all eyes are on how the AAP government responds to the mounting criticism.
