Congress Leaders Condemn Haryana Government Over Rising Crime Wave
As incidents of gang warfare, shootings for ransom, and murders continue to plague Haryana, the opposition Congress party has once again launched a sharp critique against the Nayab Singh Saini-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. On Sunday, Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Singh Surjewala and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja expressed deep concern over what they described as a deteriorating law and order situation in the state, urging Chief Minister Saini to prioritize the safety and security of Haryana's citizens.
Specific Incidents Highlighted by Opposition
Kumari Selja pointed to a recent broad daylight shooting in Kaithal, where a liquor trader was allegedly fired upon 25 times, as a stark example of the breakdown in law enforcement. She emphasized that this incident, along with a recent gang war on the Rohtak bypass, underscores the severity of the crisis. Such recurring events, Selja argued, have fostered an atmosphere of fear across Haryana, making common citizens, traders, women, and even elected officials feel increasingly vulnerable.
Selja further stated that criminals have grown so emboldened that their activities now threaten the very fabric of society. She stressed that maintaining law and order is the primary duty of any government, yet the current BJP administration appears to be faltering in this fundamental responsibility. If timely and strict action is not taken against offenders, she warned, public confidence in governance and administration will inevitably weaken.
Social Media Criticism and Broader Concerns
Randeep Singh Surjewala, who also serves as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary, took to social media to amplify these concerns. He remarked that instead of the rule of law, gangsters and criminals seem to hold sway in Haryana, highlighting a perceived failure of government authority.
The opposition leaders collectively raised alarms over the increasing cases of extortion and the open operations of gangsters in recent days. They noted that incidents where former legislators have allegedly received extortion threats indicate a near-total erosion of fear of the law among criminals. This, they asserted, is a matter of grave concern that demands immediate attention from the state government.
