Congress and Farmers Unite to Oppose India-US Trade Deal Over Agricultural Concerns
In a significant development at the Parliament House complex in New Delhi, senior Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who serves as the MLA from Bholath and chairman of the All India Kisan Congress, convened with Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The meeting included representatives from various farmers' organisations across the country, highlighting a collective stance against a proposed trade agreement.
Delegation Raises Alarm Over Trade Agreement Impact
During the discussions, the farmer delegation expressed profound concerns regarding the India-US interim trade agreement. They warned that this pact could pose a severe threat to the livelihoods of Indian farmers and farm labourers by facilitating large-scale agricultural imports. The delegation specifically pointed to potential adverse effects on key crops such as corn, soybean, cotton, fruits, and nuts. They cautioned that such measures might destabilise India's agricultural economy and undermine the nation's food security, emphasising the risks of exposing local markets to subsidised foreign produce.
Rahul Gandhi Pledges Support to Farming Community
Rahul Gandhi responded by assuring the delegation of his full support and reiterating his firm commitment to stand with the farming community against any policies that harm their interests. He stressed that any trade agreement compromising farmers' incomes or national food security is unacceptable. Gandhi affirmed that the Congress party would vigorously oppose such anti-farmer measures, both within Parliament and through public advocacy, to protect agricultural stakeholders.
Plans for Nationwide Movement and Government Accountability
Following the meeting, Sukhpal Singh Khaira briefed the media, revealing a broad consensus on launching a nationwide movement to oppose the proposed trade deal and safeguard farmers' interests. He described the agreement as a serious threat that could lead to unfair competition from heavily subsidised foreign agricultural products. Khaira announced that the All India Kisan Congress, in coordination with various farmer unions and like-minded organisations, will mobilise farmers across states to build a strong democratic movement aimed at protecting livelihoods.
Additionally, Khaira urged the Union government to immediately disclose the full details of the trade negotiations and refrain from signing any agreement that compromises the economic security of Indian farmers. This call for transparency and caution underscores the growing urgency among agricultural leaders to prevent potential harm to the sector.
