CPM Leader Tapan Sen Criticizes Indo-US and EU Trade Agreements
In a significant address at the CPM state committee meeting in Ranchi, politburo member Tapan Sen strongly condemned the proposed Indo-US and Indo-European Union trade deals, asserting that they pose a severe threat to India's national interests and sovereignty. Sen argued that these agreements would effectively transform the country into a mere assembly hub for industrial products, undermining domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Economic and Agricultural Concerns Raised
Sen elaborated that under these trade deals, critical components would be imported, leading to a dependency on foreign goods and weakening India's industrial base. He specifically highlighted the tariff rates proposed in the Indo-US deal, warning that they could severely harm Indian farmers by exposing them to unfair competition and potentially lowering agricultural prices. This, he claimed, would exacerbate rural distress and threaten food security.
Historic Strike and Upcoming Rally Announced
Reflecting on recent labor movements, Sen described the nationwide strike on February 12 against four labor laws as a historic event, demonstrating widespread opposition to policies perceived as anti-worker. Looking ahead, he announced a major rally scheduled for March 24 in New Delhi, aimed at demanding the restoration of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), protecting worker rights, and advocating for trade union freedoms. Sen emphasized that a substantial contingent from Jharkhand would participate in this mobilization.
Organizational Efforts and Campaign Plans
Supporting these initiatives, CPM state secretary Prakash Viplav outlined ambitious plans to engage the public. The party aims to contact 10 lakh people across Jharkhand to build momentum for the March rally. Additionally, a comprehensive campaign involving 'padyatras' (foot marches) will be conducted in key districts such as Ranchi, Khunti, and Gumla to raise awareness and garner support at the grassroots level.
CPM Press Statement on Urban Elections
In a related development, the CPM issued a press statement criticizing the state government for not conducting urban body elections along party lines. The party argued that this approach undermines democratic processes and accountability, calling for reforms to ensure fair political representation in local governance.
