Sumatitai Sukalikar, a veteran BJP leader who began her political career during the erstwhile Jan Sangh days, passed away in 2011 at the age of 88. Recalling her immense contributions, Gadkari stated, "Today tai is not among us, but she devoted her entire life to the organisation and to the ideology with dedication and struggle." He highlighted how her legacy continues to inspire current and future generations within the party.

Gadkari directly connected Sukalikar's unwavering dedication to the BJP's expansive growth across India. He elaborated, "If there is any real reason behind the success of BJP — whether in Nagpur, in Maharashtra or across the country — it is because of workers like tai who, in adverse circumstances, made sacrifices and worked with total dedication for the organisation and the ideology." Referring to the tumultuous political period of the late 1970s, Gadkari recounted how party workers, including Sukalikar, faced significant attacks and intimidation. He emphasized that observing Sukalikar's death anniversary as ‘Karyakarta Diwas' is a strategic way to remind younger workers of that enduring spirit of commitment and sacrifice.
