Panaji: Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte has emphasized that it is "high time" the hospitality sector in Goa is granted formal industry status, highlighting numerous tourism-related challenges in the state. He remarked that issues such as touts, stray dogs on beaches, and potholes on roads are all part of the tourism landscape, and responsibility for their resolution must be shared across various government departments.
Inspiration from Ladakh
Khaunte noted that the Ladakh administration recently elevated registered hotels and guest houses to formal 'industry' status, effective June 1. He suggested that Goa could follow a similar path to streamline operations and attract more investment.
Departmental Coordination and Single-Window System
The minister stressed that the tourism department continuously works to ensure every aspect of the sector is addressed. He called for shared responsibility among tourists and stakeholders. Additionally, he urged the completion of a single-window system for water sports before the next season to simplify licensing and operations.
Monsoon Tourism and Environmental Concerns
Khaunte directed the tourism director to hold a joint meeting with forest officials to effectively manage the monsoon tourism season, particularly adventure and hinterland tourism. He also raised concerns about unregistered tour operators organizing events in hinterland areas without environmental responsibility.
As Goa discusses regenerative tourism, Khaunte mentioned ambassadors like Parag Rangnekar who aim to promote Goa "in the right manner." He instructed the tourism director and secretary to set up a registration process for agencies operating hinterland nature tours. The department has been tasked with submitting a document detailing rules, regulations, and responsibilities to ensure swift implementation.
