Madikeri: Heavy rainfall was reported in many parts of Kodagu on Thursday, including the tourist town of Madikeri, affecting normal life even as it provided respite from the scorching heat. The downpour, which began in the morning and continued intermittently throughout the day, led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupted daily activities for residents and visitors alike.
Tree Fall Disrupts Traffic
Heavy showers led to a tree falling on the Virajpet–Moornad main road, disrupting traffic for about half an hour. The incident occurred when a large tree, weakened by the continuous rain, collapsed across the roadway, blocking vehicles in both directions. Commuters faced delays as the road was completely impassable.
NCC Cadets Spring into Action
Cadets of the NCC unit of Cauvery College, who were returning to Gonikoppal after completing training at Puthur, immediately sprang into action and cleared the fallen tree from the road. Using basic tools and their physical strength, the cadets worked swiftly to remove the debris, ensuring traffic resumed within 30 minutes. Officers lieutenant Akram and lieutenant Lepakshi were present during the operation, guiding the cadets and coordinating with local authorities.
Power Outages Across Madikeri Taluk
Major parts of Madikeri taluk experienced power disruptions throughout the day due to rainfall and repair work taken up by CESC. Many households and businesses were left without electricity for several hours, forcing residents to rely on alternative sources. The power utility company has assured that restoration efforts are underway, but warned that further rain could cause additional outages.
Despite the inconveniences, the rainfall brought much-needed relief from the intense heat that had prevailed in the region over the past few weeks. Farmers in Kodagu also welcomed the rain as it is beneficial for the ongoing agricultural activities, particularly for coffee and spice plantations.
