NEW DELHI: After a long gap, the opposition alliance INDIA is scheduled to meet on June 6 to assess the current political landscape in the country. Sources indicate that the theme of the meeting will be 'opposition politics - the way forward'. There has been a growing sentiment among opposition parties that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is consolidating its position due to a lack of unity among rivals. Additionally, regional parties have experienced a notable weakening in recent times.
Focus on Electoral Rolls and Allegations
The meeting is expected to be dominated by discussions on the alleged irregularities in the electoral rolls. Following the recent assembly election results, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized the need for vigilance regarding the conduct of elections, specifically accusing the BJP of 'stealing' the election in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, was defeated in the state. Since then, Banerjee has been advocating for a meeting of opposition parties. While the TMC has often maintained an independent stance, it has adopted a more conciliatory approach following the poll outcomes. Gandhi also called for setting aside differences to work towards 'saving democracy'.
Key Participants and Dynamics
The participation of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the meeting will be closely watched. Although the DMK has been a crucial member of the INDIA bloc, the Congress recently severed ties with the party and aligned with Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which came to power in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), which recently lost power in Kerala to the Congress, has been critical of the Congress party since its defeat.
The meeting aims to forge a unified strategy to counter the BJP's influence and address concerns about electoral integrity. The opposition parties are expected to deliberate on ways to strengthen their alliance and present a cohesive front in future elections.
