President Droupadi Murmu on Friday expressed confidence that India will eliminate sickle cell disease well before the national target of 2047, attributing this to the collective efforts of the country. Speaking at an event, she emphasized that the nation's combined strength would accelerate the eradication of the genetic blood disorder.
President's Optimism for Early Eradication
Murmu stated that the goal of eliminating sickle cell disease, which primarily affects tribal communities, would be achieved much ahead of schedule. She highlighted ongoing initiatives, including screening, counseling, and awareness campaigns, as key drivers of progress.
National Efforts and Collaboration
The President praised the collaborative work of state governments, healthcare professionals, and community workers in tackling the disease. She underscored the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in reducing the burden of sickle cell disease, which can cause severe pain and organ damage.
India launched a national mission in 2023 to eliminate sickle cell disease by 2047, focusing on prevention, management, and research. Murmu's remarks signal strong political will and public health commitment to meet and exceed this target.
