IUML withdraws from DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu after long partnership
IUML exits DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Saturday announced its withdrawal from the DMK-led alliance, ending a long-standing partnership that had endured through multiple elections in Tamil Nadu.

Decision at General Council Meeting

The decision was taken at the party's general council meeting held in Chennai. The IUML stated that a decision on alliances will be made during the upcoming local body elections. This move comes months after the 2026 assembly election, in which the DMK had allotted two seats to the IUML. The party contested from Papanasam and Vaniyambadi and won both constituencies.

Historical Alliance

The IUML first allied with the DMK in 1962, marking a decades-long political partnership. In a significant post-election development, Papanasam MLA A M Shahjahan was inducted into the TVK-led government headed by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. Shahjahan currently serves as the Minister for Minorities Welfare, giving the IUML representation in the state cabinet despite the party contesting as part of the DMK alliance.
