BJP Veteran Kalraj Mishra Voices Displeasure Over Police Action at Magh Mela
In Lucknow, following Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, senior BJP leader and former Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the alleged heckling of Batuk Brahmins, who are disciples of Swami Avimukteshwaranand, the Shankaracharya of Jyotish Peeth. This incident occurred during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj last month, sparking controversy within political circles.
Mishra Calls for Police Restraint and Consultation
Kalraj Mishra, aged 84, emphasized that the police should have exercised greater restraint and consulted with the Shankaracharya before taking any action. He stated, "What happened in Prayagraj should not have happened. Seers and their disciples should be respected." His remarks highlight a growing concern over the treatment of religious figures and their followers in public events.
Political Implications for BJP and Brahmin Support
Political observers interpret Mishra's comments as a significant assertion of Brahmin leadership within the saffron camp. This comes at a crucial time as the BJP intensifies efforts to consolidate upper-caste support ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Sections of the Brahmin lobby within the party are signaling that the state government must remain sensitive to upper-caste concerns, given their traditional role as a key part of the BJP's organisational backbone.
Criticism of UGC Equity Regulations
In addition to the Magh Mela incident, Mishra also criticized the recent University Grants Commission (UGC) equity regulations, which are currently stayed by the Supreme Court. He termed these regulations as "discriminatory, dangerous, and unconstitutional," reflecting broader ideological stances within the party on educational policies.
Background on Mishra's Community Initiatives
Last year, Kalraj Mishra established the Vishwa Brahmin Kalyan Parishad, an organization aimed at uniting members of the Brahmin community. This community has historically supported the BJP, particularly since the Ram Temple movement, underscoring the ongoing efforts to strengthen political alliances and community welfare.
The incident at the Magh Mela and Mishra's subsequent remarks are seen as part of a larger narrative to address upper-caste sentiments and maintain cohesion within the BJP's support base in Uttar Pradesh.
