Manipur Crisis: Nagas Blockade, Kukis Shutdown

The hostage crisis in Manipur continues to escalate as Naga groups have announced a blockade while Kuki organizations have extended their shutdown, with 20 victims still untraced. The crisis began on May 13 when three church leaders from the Thadou community, a part of the Kuki Zo communities, were shot dead in the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district.

Escalating Tensions

In response to the killings, Kuki groups imposed an indefinite shutdown across the region, demanding justice and the safe return of the hostages. Meanwhile, Naga civil society organizations declared a blockade to protest the violence and pressure authorities to act. The dual actions have disrupted normal life, with essential supplies and transportation severely affected.

Victims Remain Untraced

As of now, 20 individuals who were taken hostage during the incident remain missing. Security forces have launched search operations but have not yet located them. Families of the victims have appealed for calm and urged the government to intervene.

The state government has called for dialogue with both communities to de-escalate the situation. However, no breakthrough has been achieved so far. The incident has heightened ethnic tensions in the region, which has a history of conflict between Naga and Kuki groups.

Authorities have deployed additional security personnel to prevent further violence. The blockade and shutdown are expected to continue until the hostages are freed and those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
