Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Makes Rally Appearance After Health Scare
In a move that electrified supporters, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirmed his participation in the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) large-scale anti-drug rally in Moga through a social media post at 11:20 am. This announcement came shortly after his recent hospitalisation due to exhaustion, sparking widespread enthusiasm among party members and legislators.
Mann Sounds Election Bugle and Criticises Opposition
Approximately three hours following his online message, Chief Minister Mann officially kicked off the 2027 assembly election campaign from the rally venue in Killi Chahlan village. He passionately called on the public to unite against rival political factions to foster a rejuvenated Punjab. Addressing rumours about his health, Mann took sharp jabs at the opposition, asserting they were alarmed by the success of AAP's "Yudh Nasheya Virudh" (War Against Drugs) initiative.
He accused previous governments led by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress of exacerbating the state's drug epidemic. "We are systematically dismantling the networks that were fostered under earlier administrations," Mann declared, emphasising his government's proactive stance.
Key Announcements and Support from AAP Leadership
Joined by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Mann introduced members of the newly established village and ward defence committees (VDC). These committees have committed to tackling drug abuse at the grassroots level. Mann also appealed to parents to vigilantly monitor their children's post-school or college activities to prevent addiction.
Highlighting economic progress, Mann noted that his administration has created over 60,000 jobs, leading to a decline in youth emigration as confidence in Punjab's economy strengthens. Arvind Kejriwal reinforced the campaign's credibility, stating that initial scepticism has transformed into public trust. He assured informants of confidentiality and urged voters to support AAP over SAD, BJP, and Congress.
Law Enforcement and Administrative Updates
Senior leaders, including Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, addressed the gathering. Dr. Singh attributed increased heroin seizures in Punjab to heightened drone smuggling across international borders. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav reported significant enforcement actions since the campaign's inception on March 1, 2025, with more than 34,000 FIRs registered and 45,000 arrests made.
Chief Secretary KAP Sinha announced the enrolment of 1.5 lakh VDC members, describing it as a pivotal factor in sustaining the campaign's momentum. This comprehensive approach underscores the government's intensified efforts to combat drug-related issues in the state.
