Nagpur MLC Byelection Sees 98.44% Voter Turnout, Counting on June 22
Nagpur MLC Byelection: 98.44% Turnout, Counting June 22

Nagpur: The byelection to the Nagpur Local Authorities' Constituency of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) witnessed a 98.44% voter turnout on Thursday, setting the stage for a closely watched contest between BJP candidate Rajiv Potdar and Congress nominee Atul Londhe.

Of the 836 eligible voters, 823 cast their ballots across 14 polling centres in Nagpur district. Only 13 electors — 11 from Nagpur city and one each from Kamptee and Umred — abstained from voting. The elections assume significance for the Congress, which is battling organisational challenges and factional rivalries in several Vidarbha districts ahead of the MLC elections. Londhe, the Congress' Maharashtra chief spokesperson, has faced questions over the level of support from within the party, with the absence of some functionaries during his nomination process fueling speculation of internal differences within the district unit. Though the numbers suggest that BJP has the upper hand, however, considering the electoral history, the final game will only be clear on June 22, the counting day.

Elsewhere in the region, the Amravati Local Authorities' Constituency recorded a turnout of 94.68%, with 427 of the 451 eligible voters exercising their franchise across seven polling booths. BJP candidate Pravin Pote-Patil, seeking a third consecutive term, said he is confident of victory, citing his connection with voters across party lines. The highest voting percentage came from the Bhandara-Gondia Local Authorities' Constituency, where all 457 eligible electors cast their votes, resulting in a rare 100% turnout. The bypoll in this constituency has turned into a three-cornered contest involving Mahayuti candidate Avinash Brahmankar, MVA-backed Independent Naresh Ishwarkar and Independent candidate Sachin Kumbhalkar.

The Vidarbha elections have already delivered mixed political outcomes. In the Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli constituency, BJP candidate Arun Lakhani secured an unopposed victory after the Congress candidate withdrew from the race. In Yavatmal, Shiv Sena's Dushyant Chaturvedi was elected unopposed.

With polling now complete in Nagpur, Amravati and Bhandara-Gondia, attention shifts to June 22, when counting will determine whether the BJP consolidates its dominance in the region or the Congress manages to register a crucial political gain amid its internal challenges.
