Nagpur School Principal Emotionally Recalls Former Student Lost in Operation Sindoor
In a poignant moment at South Public School in Nagpur, principal Mrunalini Dasture struggled to contain her emotions after meeting the parents of her former student, Purvesh Duragkar. The meeting brought back vivid memories of a young boy she had watched grow up on the school campus, now lost while serving the nation.
A Student Remembered: From Schoolboy to Serviceman
"We have seen him grow up in the school, from a little kid to an adolescent, ready to fly out on his own," said Dasture, her voice trembling with emotion. Duragkar studied at South Public School until clearing his Class 10 examinations in 2015. Despite graduating years ago, he maintained a strong connection with the institution, frequently visiting the campus and keeping in touch with several teachers.
Dasture recalled that Duragkar often shared photographs and stories of his adventures with his former educators. "He was in Operation Sindoor and even though no details were shared, we were proud of him for putting his life on the line for the country's safety," she stated, highlighting the pride mixed with profound sorrow.

For Duragkar's batchmates, the news was equally difficult to process. Gathered at his residence, they struggled to come to terms with the reality that their friend would never greet them again. Later, the group visited their alma mater to meet Principal Dasture and other teachers, but the encounter was marked by heavy silence.
"Most of the time all kids sat silent, and we all kept wondering how this could happen. How can such a sweet kid be suddenly taken away from our midst," Dasture recounted, describing the atmosphere of disbelief and grief that enveloped the school community.
A Bright and Cheerful Student with Lofty Dreams
Teachers and friends remembered Purvesh Duragkar as a bright, cheerful student who excelled in both academics and sports. "He was an above average student who always strove to improve himself," Dasture noted, emphasizing his dedication and positive attitude.
She revealed that it was around Class 9 that Duragkar firmly decided to become a pilot. "And he also took the call that if he had to take to the skies, then it will be to protect the nation," she said, underscoring his commitment to national service from a young age.
The Emotional Toll on the School Community
With grief still hanging heavily in the air, many were reluctant to speak about the loss. However, at the insistence of reporters, Dasture shared her cherished memories of a student she had watched mature over the years.
"They are almost like our children. We see them as tiny tots in nursery and when they leave the campus they are filled with dreams," she reflected, adding that Duragkar particularly loved playing cricket, a passion that brought joy to his school days.
