Neurosurgeon quits Lucknow cancer institute, adding to exodus

A neurosurgeon at Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute in Lucknow resigned on Thursday, exacerbating the ongoing exodus of medical professionals and raising concerns about patient care for brain tumours and other neurological conditions.

Resignation and Staffing Crisis

The doctor quit after being selected at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), further reducing the already limited specialist strength. According to officials, the institute has only 41 doctors against 121 sanctioned posts, comprising 32 regular, eight under bond, and one on deputation. The institute has witnessed a steady outflow, with over 28 doctors leaving since 2017. Four newly selected doctors have yet to join.

Pay Disparities Blamed

A senior faculty member cited disparities in salary and allowances as the key reason behind the resignations. “Despite similar qualifications as doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), SGPGI and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), specialists here receive lower pay and benefits. The shortage is affecting patient care, especially in brain tumour cases where timely surgery is critical,” the faculty member said.
