Hyderabad MP Lodges Formal Complaint Against Assam Chief Minister

In a significant development, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi has taken formal legal action. On Monday, Owaisi personally submitted a detailed complaint to Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar, demanding immediate action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Core Allegation: A Controversial Social Media Video

The complaint centers on a highly contentious video that was allegedly posted from the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 7, 2026. According to Owaisi, although the video was removed from the platform a day later, it continues to circulate widely across various social media channels.

"The video depicts Himanta Biswa Sarma armed with a firearm and engaging in shooting," Owaisi stated explicitly in his written complaint. He emphasized that the imagery, coupled with specific audio statements like "point-blank shot" and "no mercy", constitutes far more than mere political rhetoric.

Legal Grounds: Allegations of Inciting Communal Discord

Owaisi's complaint argues that the content represents a deliberate and malicious act with clear intent. He asserts it is designed specifically to outrage the religious sentiments of Muslims, actively promote hatred and ill-will between different religious communities, and ultimately incite communal violence.

"The video was posted online and was accessible across India, including within the jurisdiction of this police station," Owaisi noted, establishing the territorial relevance for the Hyderabad police to investigate the matter.

Citing Supreme Court Precedent on Hate Speech

Strengthening his legal position, the Hyderabad MP referenced the landmark Supreme Court judgement in the Shaheen Abdullah Vs Union of India case. He highlighted the court's directive that law enforcement agencies must take suo motu (on its own motion) action in cases of hate speech, even in the absence of a formal complaint.

"Any inaction or hesitation by the police in such matters would amount to a serious dereliction of duty," Owaisi quoted, applying judicial weight to his demand for immediate police intervention against the Assam Chief Minister.

Police Response and Current Status

Following the submission of the complaint, Owaisi publicly posted a copy on his own X handle, directly tagging Police Commissioner Sajjanar to ensure visibility and accountability. However, initial reports from Hyderabad police officials indicate that a formal First Information Report (FIR) has not yet been registered in the matter. The police are currently examining the complaint and the associated evidence presented by the MP.

This development marks a serious escalation in political tensions, bringing allegations of hate speech and incitement directly to the doorstep of a serving Chief Minister through official police channels.
