The Emergency was proclaimed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, citing internal disturbances. It led to widespread human rights abuses, including forced sterilizations, demolitions in slums, and censorship. Modi's remarks come as India marks the anniversary of the Emergency's end on March 21, 1977. According to historical records, over 100,000 people were arrested without trial during this period.
