Political Confrontation Intensifies Over Alleged Historical Comparison

A political firestorm erupted in Maharashtra on Sunday as an alleged comparison between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan escalated into a major confrontation, drawing leaders from Maharashtra and Telangana into a heated debate and triggering protests across Nagpur and other parts of the state.

BJP Demands Resignation of Congress Chief

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded the immediate resignation of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Harshwardhan Sapkal over the controversial remarks. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule called on Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to seek an explanation and demand Sapkal's resignation without delay, labeling the alleged comparison as an affront to Shivaji Maharaj's legacy.

"Such remarks are completely unacceptable and constitute a grave insult to our history," Bawankule stated emphatically. He warned that silence from the Congress leadership would be interpreted as tacit approval of the statement.

Protests Erupt Across Nagpur

In Nagpur and several other locations, BJP workers took to the streets, raising slogans and demanding an apology from Sapkal. The protests turned symbolic as some demonstrators struck Sapkal's posters with shoes in a dramatic display of disapproval.

AIMIM Chief Defends Tipu Sultan

The controversy expanded significantly when All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi entered the fray with a vigorous defense of the 18th-century Mysore ruler. "In 1799, Tipu Sultan died fighting the British," Owaisi asserted. "He did not sit in jail and write love letters to the British."

Owaisi elaborated that the British feared Tipu even after his death, claiming his body lay for over an hour as soldiers hesitated to approach it. The AIMIM leader also questioned Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who had criticized Sapkal on Saturday for comparing the legendary Maratha warrior with Tipu Sultan.

Owaisi presented multiple arguments in defense of Tipu Sultan:

  • He questioned whether it was not true that a ring associated with Tipu bore the name "Ram"
  • He referenced a 2014 auction in Britain related to Tipu Sultan artifacts
  • He cited former President APJ Abdul Kalam's writing on rocket technology
  • He pointed to historical accounts of Tipu supporting Hindu-Muslim unity, including assistance to the Sringeri Mutt

"The BJP is spreading only hatred through selective historical narratives," Owaisi concluded.

Telangana BJP President Rejects Assertions

Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao firmly rejected Owaisi's assertions, countering that "by glorifying Tipu Sultan, the AIMIM is deliberately distorting historical facts." Rao alleged that Tipu persecuted Hindus in parts of Karnataka and Mysore, and dismissed claims that Vinayak Damodar Savarkar sought British clemency as "completely false."

"India will never accept such a distorted version of history," Rao declared emphatically.

Minister Questions Maha Vikas Aghadi Alliance

Revenue Minister Bawankule further intensified the political dimension by questioning the stand of leaders in the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, particularly targeting Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. Rather than "accepting helplessness," Bawankule suggested Thackeray should reconsider remaining in the alliance if such remarks were being tolerated.

Referring to statements by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, Bawankule pointedly asked whether Thackeray agreed with equating Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan.

Personal Attack on Congress Leadership

In a sharp personal critique, Bawankule asserted that Sapkal's remarks reflected poor judgement and that such a leader should not continue in office. He warned that if Congress workers defended the statement, "the entire Congress party would be insulting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj."

The minister also referenced past controversies involving remarks on Shivaji Maharaj and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, characterizing repeated disputes over historical figures as "a serious matter requiring immediate attention."

Congress Response and Ongoing Controversy

The Congress party has not issued a detailed clarification on the matter thus far. Party sources indicate that internal discussions are underway amid mounting political pressure from multiple fronts.

With demonstrations spreading across Maharashtra and political leaders trading increasingly sharp charges over historical interpretation, the controversy shows no signs of abating. The confrontation has evolved from a regional political dispute into a broader debate about historical narratives, communal harmony, and political accountability.

As protests continue and rhetoric intensifies, the political landscape in Maharashtra remains tense, with historical figures becoming the focal point of contemporary political battles that resonate across state lines and political affiliations.
