Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Expands Definition of National Security to Include Cultural Foundations
In a significant address, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh articulated that the concept of national security transcends mere geographical boundaries, encompassing the protection of a nation's cultural roots, values, and identity. Speaking at the closing ceremony of a three-day event in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on February 6, 2026, Singh highlighted the critical role of cultural preservation in ensuring a country's long-term stability and strength.
Haridwar as the Epicenter of India's Cultural Consciousness
During the 'Gurudev Samadhi Mandir - Murti Sthapana Samaroh' event at the Bharat Mata Temple complex in Haridwar's Sapt Rishi area, Singh described the city not just as a pilgrimage site but as a vital center of India's cultural consciousness. He noted, "This is the land where Ganga departs from the mountains and enters the plains. The spirituality in the air here, the chants echoing across the ghats, the penance of saints, and the faith of millions of devotees make Haridwar the source of India's cultural stream."
Redefining the Role of National Defence
Singh challenged conventional perceptions of a defence minister's duties, stating, "Generally, it is believed that the responsibility of the Defence Minister is limited only to the protection of the nation's borders, armed forces, and territorial security. This is true to an extent, but I believe that the meaning of national security is not confined merely to safeguarding the borders. The protection of a nation's cultural identity and the preservation of its civilisational consciousness are equally important." He emphasized that a nation cannot be considered truly secure until its cultural foundations are protected, citing historical examples where cultural decline led to the downfall of powerful civilizations.
Integrating Modernity with Cultural Values
The Defence Minister also addressed the relationship between modernity and tradition, asserting that they are complementary rather than opposed. "When technological knowledge is combined with values, no force can weaken the nation," he said, referencing India's contributions such as the concept of zero, Ayurveda, yoga, and the art of living. Singh called upon the youth to actively participate in nation-building and urged a collective resolve to protect the unity, sovereignty, and dignity of the country.
Support from State Leaders on Cultural Preservation
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, speaking at the event, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership for enhancing global recognition of India's Sanatan culture and heritage. He highlighted Uttarakhand's progress in balancing development with heritage preservation. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, also present, described the Bharat Mata Temple as a symbol of national unity that transcends caste, region, and language barriers, binding the nation together.
Union Minister for Energy and Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar expressed his privilege in attending the ceremony, noting inspiration from the saint community. Additionally, Chief Ministers Yogi and Dhami participated in a programme at Intercollege Yamkeshwar, where Yogi emphasized the importance of schools promoting values, culture, and spiritual traditions alongside academic knowledge, drawing parallels to the ancient Gurukul system for holistic development.
