BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad Conducts Ancestral Rituals at Vishnupad Temple in Gaya
Former Union minister and Patna Sahib BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad visited the historic Vishnupad temple in Gaya on Monday to perform traditional Hindu rituals for his ancestors. Accompanied by his wife Maya Shankar and son Aditya Shankar, Prasad engaged in pinddaan and tarpan, sacred offerings made to honor departed souls.
Honoring National Icons and Ancestral Spirits
During the ceremonies, Prasad extended his prayers beyond his family lineage to include several revered national figures. He specifically mentioned Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This gesture highlighted the spiritual and cultural significance of the rituals in paying homage to influential leaders who have shaped India's political landscape.
Proposal to Honor Martyr Soldiers
In a brief interaction with media representatives after completing the rituals, Prasad expressed profound satisfaction with his experience at the temple. "I felt great peace and satisfaction at the Vishnupad temple. The arrangements here are very good," he stated. The BJP leader then introduced a thoughtful proposal, suggesting that the temple could serve as a site for performing shradh ceremonies for the nation's martyr soldiers. "One thing has come to my mind about which I will talk to the defence minister, if Gaya shradh can be performed at Vishnupad temple for the martyr soldiers of our nation," Prasad added, indicating a potential initiative to recognize the sacrifices of military personnel through traditional rites.
Arrangements and Guidance at the Temple
The Vishnupad temple management committee had made special preparations on the temple premises to facilitate Prasad's rituals. Senior Gayapal panda Manilal Barik provided expert guidance, leading Prasad through the ceremonies not only at the Vishnupad temple but also at Akshaywat and in the Falgu river. These locations are integral to the ritualistic practices in Gaya, known for their spiritual importance in Hindu traditions related to ancestor worship.
Gaya, a city in Bihar, is renowned as a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus, particularly for performing pinddaan, which is believed to help souls attain peace. The Vishnupad temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a central site for these rituals, attracting devotees from across the country. Prasad's visit underscores the ongoing cultural and religious relevance of such practices in contemporary Indian society, blending personal devotion with public remembrance of national heroes.
