In a sharp retort to the ongoing delimitation debate, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor challenged the ruling party's stance with a thought-provoking salary analogy. Addressing Naidu, Tharoor suggested a hypothetical scenario where salaries are allocated based on population, drawing parallels to the contentious issue of redrawing parliamentary constituencies.
The Salary Analogy
Tharoor proposed, "Let's try a thought experiment. If we decide that salaries should be based on population, then the most populous states would get the highest pay, while smaller states would see their earnings slashed. Would that be fair?" He argued that the same principle applies to delimitation, where southern states fear losing representation due to slower population growth.
Core of the Debate
The delimitation exercise, which redraws Lok Sabha constituencies based on population, has sparked concerns among states that successfully implemented family planning. Southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala worry that their lower population growth will result in fewer seats, despite their contributions to the national economy.
Tharoor emphasized that representation should not be a punishment for effective governance. He called for a balanced approach that considers both population and developmental metrics.
Naidu's Position
Union Minister Naidu has defended delimitation as necessary for fair representation, citing the need to reflect demographic changes. However, Tharoor's analogy highlights the potential inequity, urging a rethink of the criteria used.
The debate underscores a larger tension between states with divergent population trends, with implications for federal balance and political power in India.
