Tharoor Acknowledges Positive Trends in Jammu and Kashmir
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has described the situation in Jammu and Kashmir as showing "encouraging progress towards normalcy," citing improvements in security, economic activity, and political participation. His remarks come amid ongoing debates over the region's status since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Speaking to reporters, Tharoor noted that the increase in tourist footfall and the conduct of local elections indicate a gradual return to routine life. "The fact that people are going about their daily lives, that tourists are visiting, and that there is political activity at the grassroots level are all positive signs," he said.
Security Situation and Political Engagement
Tharoor emphasized that while challenges remain, the overall security environment has improved compared to previous years. He pointed out that the number of militant attacks has declined, and the administration has taken steps to restore confidence among residents.
"We must not ignore the concerns of the people, but it is also important to acknowledge the steps taken towards normalcy," Tharoor added. He credited both the central government and local authorities for efforts in maintaining law and order.
Economic Recovery and Tourism Boost
The region has witnessed a revival in tourism, with over 16 million domestic tourists visiting in 2023, according to official data. Tharoor highlighted this as a key indicator of returning normalcy. "Tourism is a vital part of the economy, and its resurgence is a positive development," he said.
He also noted that local businesses, including handicrafts and agriculture, are showing signs of recovery. However, he stressed the need for sustained efforts to address unemployment and infrastructure gaps.
Political Dialogue and Future Prospects
Tharoor called for continued political dialogue involving all stakeholders, including elected representatives from the region. He expressed hope that the upcoming parliamentary elections would be held peacefully and with full participation.
"The restoration of full statehood and the holding of assembly elections are important steps that need to be addressed," Tharoor said, reiterating the Congress party's stance on the issue.
Conclusion
While acknowledging the progress, Tharoor cautioned against complacency. "Normalcy is a process, not an event. We must remain vigilant and ensure that the rights and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are fully respected," he concluded.
