TMC Leader Sushmita Dev Accuses Assam CM of Undermining Internal Security

Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev has leveled serious allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, claiming he is "jeopardising" the internal security of the state and disrupting peace through his statements. Dev made these remarks in a post on social media platform X, just one day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited poll-bound Assam to inaugurate multiple development projects.

Context of the Allegations

In her statement, Dev referenced Prime Minister Modi's recent comments during his Assam visit, where he described the northeastern states as "extremely sensitive and strategic areas." However, she argued that the Assam Chief Minister's actions contradict this acknowledgment. "But what he doesn’t realise is the chief minister of Assam is constantly disturbing the internal peace of Assam," Dev asserted in a video statement, emphasizing the disconnect between the Prime Minister's words and the ground reality.

Legal and Security Concerns Raised

Dev further elaborated on her accusations by citing legal provisions. She pointed out that provoking enmity between communities is prohibited under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). "But the chief minister of Assam consistently is jeopardising the internal security of Assam, something that the Manipur CM has already done and ruined Manipur," the TMC Rajya Sabha MP alleged. This comparison draws attention to ongoing tensions in the region, suggesting a pattern of behavior that threatens stability.

Call for Accountability

In a direct appeal to Prime Minister Modi, Dev urged him to move beyond mere rhetoric. "So, I ask the Prime Minister that do not please pay lip service to the fact that the northeastern states are sensitive. People who are disturbing the peace, the people who are threatening internal security, are your own people," she stated. This call highlights her demand for concrete action against those she believes are responsible for the unrest, implicating figures within the ruling party.

The allegations come at a critical time, with Assam preparing for upcoming elections and the northeast region remaining a focal point for national security discussions. Dev's statements underscore the political tensions and security challenges in the area, as leaders debate the balance between development initiatives and maintaining communal harmony.
