Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, also the president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has called a crucial meeting at a resort on the East Coast Road (ECR) near Chennai on June 29, 2026, to forge a new 'secular alliance' ahead of the next assembly elections. The meeting is seen as a major political realignment in the state, as TVK aims to bring together parties that were formerly part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).
Invited Parties and Their Stance
The Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], Communist Party of India (CPI), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the MDMK have all been invited to the meeting. According to a TVK spokesperson, the party is seeking to build a broad coalition based on secular principles and social justice. The DMK, which currently leads the SPA, has not been invited, signaling a potential split in the existing alliance structure.
Political analysts note that the DMK's dominance in the SPA has been a point of contention for smaller parties. The IUML, for instance, has previously expressed dissatisfaction with seat-sharing arrangements. The VCK, a party representing Dalit interests, has also hinted at exploring alternatives. The Congress, which has been a junior partner in the SPA, may see the TVK's move as an opportunity to regain relevance in Tamil Nadu politics.
CM Vijay's Strategy
CM Vijay, who took office in 2024 after a landslide victory, has been consolidating his position. The TVK's push for a secular alliance is viewed as a strategy to counter the BJP's growing influence in the state. In a recent statement, Vijay emphasized the need for a united front against communal forces. The meeting at the ECR resort is expected to finalize a common minimum programme and discuss seat-sharing for the 2027 assembly elections.
According to sources close to the CM, the alliance will be named the 'United Secular Front' (USF). The TVK is likely to offer key portfolios to alliance partners in a future government. The meeting is also expected to address the concerns of minority communities, with the IUML pushing for reservations in education and employment.
Reactions and Implications
The DMK has dismissed the move as a desperate attempt by TVK to shore up support. DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said, "The DMK-led SPA has been a successful alliance for decades. Any attempt to break it will only weaken secular forces." However, the CPI(M) state secretary K. Balakrishnan welcomed the initiative, stating that "the time is ripe for a new secular alternative."
Political analyst N. Sathiya Moorthy commented, "This meeting could reshape Tamil Nadu politics. If TVK succeeds in forming a broad alliance, it could challenge the DMK's hegemony and provide a viable alternative to the BJP." The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 AM and is expected to continue into the evening.
