TVK Set to Enter Rajya Sabha for First Time as Bypoll Announced

The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is poised to secure its first representation in the Rajya Sabha following the Election Commission's announcement of a bypoll for the lone Tamil Nadu seat. The vacancy arose after former AIADMK minister C Ve Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House on May 7, having won the assembly election from Mailam constituency. His original term was scheduled to continue until June 29, 2028.

Bypoll Schedule and Process

The Election Commission of India (ECI) confirmed on Friday that voting for the Rajya Sabha seat will take place on June 18. The last date for filing nominations is June 8, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 11. Counting of votes will commence at 5 pm on June 18, and the entire election process is expected to be completed before June 20, as per the ECI's press release.

Since the election is for only one Rajya Sabha seat, the candidate backed by the party or alliance commanding a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly is expected to win under the proportional representation system. TVK currently holds 107 seats in the Assembly, making it the single largest party. With the support of allies including the Congress, VCK, and Left parties, its strength rises to 119. Additionally, backing from the SP Velumani-CV Shanmugam faction brings the government's support base to 144 MLAs, far exceeding the majority mark.

Political Implications

Political analyst P Srinivasan noted that the choice of TVK's first Rajya Sabha nominee would be closely watched, as Upper House seats have played a crucial role in alliance negotiations ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. He pointed out that in both the NDA and the DMK-led alliance, Rajya Sabha berths were used as part of pre-poll power-sharing arrangements. For instance, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss received a berth in the NDA camp, while DMDK's LK Sudhish and Congress leader Christopher Tilak were accommodated in the DMK-led alliance.

"Now the question is whether Vijay uses the seat to retain allies like Congress or VCK, or rewards a functionary from within TVK and signals that the party has entered a new phase politically," Srinivasan added. The decision will be pivotal in shaping TVK's alliance strategy and its political trajectory in the state.
