Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday launched a blistering attack on the BJP, accusing the party of betraying Hindus by allegedly embezzling donations collected for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Addressing a rally in Yavatmal-Washin constituency, Thackeray vowed to lead protests to achieve a 'BJP-mukt Ram' (BJP-free Ram).
Allegations of Embezzlement and Political Motives
Thackeray said, "Real Hindutva teaches humanity. We reject your (BJP's) Hindutva of looting temples. We want 'BJP-mukt Ram' and Shiv Sena (UBT) will lead such protests." He accused the BJP of breaking political parties to divert public attention from real issues. The remarks come amid a political storm over the alleged misappropriation of funds at the Ram temple trust.
All eight individuals arrested in connection with the embezzlement were remanded in judicial custody on Friday. Investigators reported recovering Rs 79.85 lakh from the accused. The temple trust had collected donations from devotees across the country for the construction of the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Political Fallout and Reactions
The scandal has deepened tensions between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the BJP, former allies in Maharashtra. Thackeray's rally was held in support of dissident Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Deshmukh, who recently joined the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde. Thackeray used the platform to target the BJP's governance and its handling of the temple funds.
The opposition has demanded a thorough investigation into the embezzlement, calling it a betrayal of Hindu sentiments. The BJP has not yet issued an official response to Thackeray's allegations.
Impact on Hindutva Politics
Thackeray's call for 'BJP-mukt Ram' marks a significant shift in the political discourse around the Ram temple, a project long championed by the BJP. By linking the party to financial impropriety, Thackeray aims to undermine the BJP's claim to be the sole custodian of Hindutva. The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief emphasized that true Hindutva is about humanity, not looting temples.
The recovery of Rs 79.85 lakh from the arrested individuals suggests a larger network of corruption, according to investigators. The case has sparked debate over the transparency of temple fund management.
