According to state tourism department data, Uttarakhand witnessed a 25% increase in domestic tourists interested in wellness tourism over the past year. The government aims to double this figure by 2026 through targeted marketing campaigns and partnerships with international wellness organizations.

International Yoga Day Celebrations

The International Yoga Day event in Dehradun saw participation from over 10,000 people, including yoga enthusiasts, spiritual leaders, and foreign delegates. Dhami led a mass yoga session, performing asanas alongside participants. The event also featured demonstrations by renowned yoga gurus and cultural performances highlighting the state's spiritual heritage.

“Uttarakhand is not just a geographical region; it is a spiritual sanctuary. We are committed to preserving and promoting this legacy while providing world-class facilities for wellness seekers,” Dhami added, attributing the state's natural beauty and serene environment as key assets for yoga tourism.

Economic and Social Impact

The government's focus on yoga and wellness is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, particularly for local youth trained as yoga instructors and wellness therapists. The CM noted that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of promoting yoga globally and boosting India's soft power. “By making Uttarakhand a global hub, we will not only enhance our economy but also contribute to global health and well-being,” Dhami said.

State officials confirmed that the Yoga University in Rishikesh is expected to be operational by 2025, with an initial intake of 500 students. The university will collaborate with international institutions to offer exchange programs and research fellowships.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, the state government plans to organize an annual International Yoga Festival in Uttarakhand, featuring workshops, seminars, and competitions. Dhami also announced tax incentives for businesses investing in wellness infrastructure, including eco-friendly resorts and Ayurvedic treatment centers.

The Chief Minister concluded by inviting global yoga practitioners to explore Uttarakhand's offerings, stating, “Come, experience the transformative power of yoga in the land where it was born. We welcome you to our state, the future global capital of wellness.”
