Gurgaon: A 40-acre site at Patli Hazipur village in Farrukhnagar tehsil has been categorised as “fully feasible” for collection and processing of fresh waste generated by the city. The Patli Hazipur site is among 10 locations outside municipal limits, which were examined by a five-member panel. However, the committee, headed by MCG additional commissioner Ravinder Yadav, has also shortlisted certain sites within the MCG limits.
This is not the first time when the civic body started to hunt a land parcel to dump and process the city’s fresh waste. It was in Dec 2022 that MCG sought environment and forest land clearance of 20 acres of forest land in Balola village. The clearance was sought from the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) so that MCG could divert the city’s fresh waste to this site and reduce the burden on Bandhwari. The civic body also proposed giving 20 acres of land in Nathupur to the forest department in exchange for the Balola land.
MCG additional commissioner Ravinder Yadav said, “We are in the process of identifying a suitable land parcel in the district, including within and outside the MCG limits. A decision will be taken soon.” The panel, which was constituted to identify land, has zeroed in on the Farrukhnagar site — located around 22 km from the MCG’s Sector 34 office — primarily because of its proximity to Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway.
According to the committee’s assessment, a 50-acre parcel at Ganghola in Sohna has been classified as “semi-feasible.” The Ganghola site, which falls outside the MCG limits, faces concerns related to the presence of keekar trees and its distance from nearby villages.
The exercise of identifying a land parcel for fresh waste follows directions issued by Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar during a review meeting on May 28, when he instructed officials to stop the accumulation of freshly generated waste at the Bandhwari landfill and identify a separate location for handling daily municipal waste.
An MCG official told TOI, “A major challenge in identifying a site for the city’s fresh waste is the dense urban development across Gurgaon. Residential, commercial and industrial establishments are located within every 500 metres, making it difficult to find an isolated land parcel. However, people must understand that this is their waste and addressing the issue will require public cooperation.”
Another 25-acre land parcel in Kasan is also in the list and is adjacent to the proposed site for a waste-to-energy plant. However, the site in Manesar also has some houses in the vicinity. The remaining seven sites were not found suitable to divert the city’s fresh waste. Sites at Ghamdoj, Gwalior (Manesar), Silani, Madhawar, Samarthala and Gugana were all marked “not feasible” because of factors such as proximity to habitation, location near an Army firing range, a railway track, village roads and other constraints. The committee also inspected sites at Uncha Mazra in Pataudi, where a stadium has been constructed, so it was found unsuitable for the purpose.
