Madurai Police Find 1,783 Vehicles with Defective Number Plates

Madurai: The Madurai city police have identified 1,783 vehicles with defective or non-compliant registration number plates during a three-day enforcement and awareness drive conducted from June 15 to 17. Vehicle owners were given a deadline of 5pm on June 18 to rectify the defects before legal cases are registered against them.

Purpose of the Drive

According to police officials, defective or missing number plates make it challenging to identify vehicles involved in crimes and traffic violations. The drive was carried out at 10 major junctions across the city, covering two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers.

Inspection Results

During the inspections, authorities found 1,425 two-wheelers, 108 three-wheelers, and 250 four-wheelers operating with defective number plates. Out of the total identified vehicles, 560 owners corrected the defects on the spot during the campaign itself.

Additionally, police intercepted 50 two-wheelers that were being operated without any registration number plates. These vehicles were allowed to leave only after the owners fitted proper number plates, officials said.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

Authorities stated that motorists who failed to rectify the defects by the deadline were slapped with traffic cases. Starting next week, traffic personnel will photograph offending vehicles and initiate action against violators. Police also conducted awareness campaigns emphasizing compliance with traffic signals, urging motorists not to cross stop lines or occupy zebra crossings at junctions.

Facilitation Centers for Pending Fines

To facilitate the recovery of pending traffic fines, police set up facilitation centers at Kalavasal Junction, Goripalayam Junction, and Kattabomman Statue Junction near Periyar bus stand. Between June 15 and 17, these centers collected ₹2.74 lakh in unpaid penalties from motorists.

Police said the special centers would continue to function and urged vehicle owners to clear pending dues at the earliest.
