Non-Marathi auto, taxi drivers in Maharashtra must get Marathi certificate by Aug 15, 2026
Marathi certificate mandatory for non-Marathi drivers by Aug 15

The Maharashtra state transport department has announced that non-Marathi auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers who fail to obtain a Marathi language proficiency certificate by August 15, 2026, will face legal and penal action. The directive was issued on Friday, emphasizing the need for drivers to complete a four-hour 'Marathi Bhasha Samvad Pathyakram' (Marathi communication course) between June 1 and August 15, 2026.

Authorized Institutions for Training

The Maharashtra State Marathi Language Department, Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad, and Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh have been designated as authorized institutions to conduct the course free of charge. Certificates issued by these bodies alone will be recognized by the transport department.

Training Centers and Teachers

Transport Department Joint Commissioner Ravi Gaikwad stated that 71 training centers have been established across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Approximately 4,500 teachers affiliated with the Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad have been engaged to conduct the training. Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials are also assisting drivers with enrollment and completion of the course.

Objective of the Program

The primary goal of the initiative is to eliminate language barriers between passengers and drivers, thereby improving service quality and enhancing professional opportunities for drivers. The department clarified that the intention is not to penalize drivers but to ensure they avail of the free training and obtain the certificate within the stipulated period.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

After August 15, 2026, legal and penal action will be taken against non-Marathi drivers who do not possess the certificate, the department warned. Gaikwad reiterated that the focus is on compliance through training rather than punishment.
