The Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development, Punjab, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has started constructing five working women hostels in Mohali, Jalandhar, and Amritsar to provide safe and affordable accommodation.
Inauguration in Mohali
Minister Dr Baljit Kaur inaugurated a seven-storey hostel in Sector 66, Mohali, with MLA Kulwant Singh present. The project costs Rs 70 crore, executed by the Public Works Department on priority.
Largest government hostel
Upon completion, it will be Punjab's largest government-run working women hostel, accommodating 484 women with single rooms, double occupancy, and dormitories. A creche and indoor recreational facilities will be included.
Other hostels under construction
Dr Kaur noted this is the third hostel in Mohali. A 150-bed hostel at NIFT, Mohali, costs Rs 25.26 crore, and a 100-bed hostel in Sector 79, Mohali, costs Rs 12.57 crore. In Jalandhar, a 100-bed hostel at Gandhi Vinita Ashram costs Rs 10.11 crore, and a 150-bed hostel in Amritsar costs Rs 27.34 crore.
Affordable rents
Accommodation will be provided at nominal rental charges to ease the burden on working women away from home. The minister expressed confidence that all projects will be completed on time.
