26,828 NRI complaints resolved in 4 years: Punjab Minister

Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Dr Ravjot Singh announced on Wednesday that 26,828 complaints from Non-Resident Punjabis were received between January 2022 and May 2026, of which 25,870 have been resolved. Speaking at the 'NRI Milni-2026' event in Mohali, he emphasized the government's commitment to transparent and time-bound grievance redressal.

Event Highlights and Participation

The programme, held in Sector 82, Mohali, aimed to hear grievances and ensure immediate on-the-spot action by concerned authorities. A large number of NRIs from Mohali, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Fatehgarh Sahib districts participated. Singh noted that Punjabis abroad maintain strong ties with their roots and have earned global recognition for Punjab and India.

Complaint Resolution Statistics

According to the minister, during the four-year period, 1,187 FIRs were registered and 1,451 accused were arrested in connection with NRI-related complaints. The majority of grievances involve property disputes, illegal occupation of land, documentary irregularities, and matrimonial issues. Approximately 5,000 complaints are received annually, with many resolved through mutual settlement or legal process.

Personal Monitoring and National Issues

Singh stated that he personally monitors long-pending cases or those with delayed proceedings. Regarding cases in Canada involving contract marriages and forged documents for work permits or permanent residency, he described the issue as serious and of national importance. While the legal framework falls under Parliament's jurisdiction, the Punjab government is actively addressing such cases and will present the state's case to the Union Government for a permanent solution.
