AAP MLA's Daughter-in-Law Faces FIR Over Alleged Australian PR Fraud in Ludhiana
In a startling development from Ludhiana, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the daughter-in-law of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, along with six family members, for an alleged case of Australian Permanent Residency (PR) fraud. The complaint, filed at the Daba police station, accuses Navneet Kaur, now residing in Australia, and her relatives of deceitfully withdrawing her husband's name from a PR application following a matrimonial dispute.
Details of the Alleged Fraud and Matrimonial Dispute
The case revolves around Navneet Kaur, who married Navkiranjit Singh, the son of MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina. According to the complaint lodged by Harpreet Singh, the MLA's husband, the family spent approximately Rs 50 lakh to send Navneet to Australia after the marriage, with Navkiranjit joining her on a spouse visa in 2018. The couple subsequently applied for Australian PR, with the understanding that they would settle there permanently.
However, tensions arose when a dispute over gold jewellery erupted between Navneet's parents and Navkiranjit's family back in Ludhiana. Upon learning of this, Navkiranjit confronted his wife in Australia, leading to a serious marital conflict. It is alleged that in the aftermath, Navneet withdrew her husband's name from the PR application file, effectively jeopardizing his residency prospects.
Legal Action and Police Investigation
The FIR has been registered under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 380 (theft), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police officials noted that since the couple moved to Australia in 2018, before the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) came into force, the IPC provisions apply. A thorough probe has been initiated to investigate the allegations.
In addition to Navneet Kaur, the FIR names her parents, Teja Singh Nagra and Harpal Kaur Nagra from Mohali, as well as relatives Kaka Singh and Phalel Singh from Patiala, Amar Singh Nagra from Sangrur, and Sukhdev Singh Patwari. The police are examining the roles of all accused in the alleged fraud scheme.
Political and Family Reactions
MLA Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, a first-time AAP legislator from the Ludhiana South constituency, has refrained from extensive public comment, describing the matter as a private family issue. However, she confirmed that her family has taken legal steps by registering the case against the daughter-in-law and her relatives. This incident highlights the intersection of personal disputes with legal ramifications, drawing attention within political circles in Punjab.
The case underscores broader issues related to international migration and matrimonial conflicts, particularly involving high-profile families. As the investigation progresses, it may shed light on the complexities of spouse visa processes and the potential for fraud in such scenarios.
