A devastating incident stemming from severe financial distress has shaken a village in Amritsar, where a 30-year-old man died by suicide after allegedly poisoning his two young daughters.
A Father's Desperate Act
According to the Lopoke police station, the man, identified as Lovepreet Singh, took the extreme step on Monday in Shura village. Before carrying out his plan, he reportedly dropped his wife, Kuldip Kaur, at Attari to ensure she was not at home. Once alone, he prepared dalia (porridge), mixed it with a poisonous substance, and served it to his daughters before consuming it himself.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
The victims were Lovepreet's two daughters: 7-year-old Jaspreet Kaur and 4-year-old Veerpal Kaur. After all three began showing severe symptoms of poisoning, they were rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite receiving emergency treatment, all three succumbed to the poisoning.
Poverty and Unemployment as Key Factors
Preliminary police investigations point to abject poverty and unemployment as the primary motives behind this heart-wrenching act. Station House Officer (SHO) Narinder Singh stated that Lovepreet lived in dire financial conditions and had no job. His wife worked as a labourer to support the family. Police described Lovepreet as a quiet and hardworking man who had recently been unable to provide for his family, leading to immense despair.
The police have registered a case, and further inquiries are currently underway to ascertain the complete sequence of events and the exact substance used in the poisoning.
