Senior NCP Minister Addresses Merger Speculations, Emphasizes BJP's Role
In a significant development within Maharashtra's political landscape, senior cabinet minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal has stated that senior members of the party are unaware of any ongoing discussions regarding a potential merger of the NCP's two factions. Bhujbal emphasized that any decision on such a critical matter would necessitate the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), given the NCP's current alliance within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
Clarifications Amidst Political Uncertainty
Speaking to reporters in Yeola, located in the Nashik district, on Monday, Bhujbal addressed the swirling rumors about a possible unification of the NCP and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) factions. "The discussions on merger may have happened. But none of us is aware of it," Bhujbal asserted. He further clarified that Sunetra Pawar, the widow of late leader Ajit Pawar, is now the party's leader and will make appropriate decisions regarding the party's future direction.
Bhujbal's comments came during his visits to Yeola and Nashik city, where party members gathered at NCP offices to pay their last respects to Ajit Pawar, who tragically died in an airplane crash on January 28. The emotional gatherings underscored the party's current state of transition and reflection.
Collective Decision-Making and BJP Backing Essential
Elaborating on the procedural aspects, Bhujbal stressed that any merger decision must be taken collectively by the party leadership. "This decision has to be taken collectively. It also needs the backing of the chief minister and the BJP brass," he explained. He highlighted the NCP's position within the ruling coalition, noting, "We are with them in government. If we are moving out of government, then it is a different thing."
Reflecting on Ajit Pawar's legacy, Bhujbal added, "We all believe that Ajitdada never thought about moving away from NDA," suggesting a continuity in the party's alliance commitments.
Addressing Video Footage and Thackeray Comparison
When questioned about a video circulating on social media that showed NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar holding a discussion in the presence of NCP (SP) office-bearers, Bhujbal provided context. He stated that the meeting was primarily focused on an agriculture exhibition, with Ajit Pawar attending as the sole representative from the NCP due to his Baramati connections. "If a merger were to be discussed, obviously, some of our colleagues would have been there to finalise the terms and conditions," he reasoned.
Drawing a parallel to recent political developments in Maharashtra, Bhujbal mentioned the collaboration between the Thackeray cousins during the recent corporation elections. "I had wondered why the Pawars could not do the same," he admitted. However, he pointed out a key distinction: "The thin line is that the Thackerays have issues. In case of NCP, which is part of NDA, we will have to get the support from NDA led by BJP."
Sunetra Pawar's Leadership and Future Vision
Bhujbal also addressed the swift appointment of Sunetra Pawar as deputy chief minister, denying any undue haste in the process. He explained that the move aimed to quell speculations about who would fill the position vacated after her husband's demise. "We had to give a decisive answer to put to rest the speculations. The best way was to get Sunetratai on board. We did just that," he stated.
Praising Sunetra Pawar's capabilities, Bhujbal noted that Ajit Pawar frequently discussed party matters with her, and she has a proven track record of effective work as a Member of Parliament from Baramati. "She is in the best position to know the vision of Ajit Dada and the future of the party, and the party will follow whatever decision she takes," he affirmed, expressing confidence in her leadership during this challenging period.
As the NCP navigates this phase of transition and potential restructuring, Bhujbal's remarks highlight the intricate dynamics at play, underscoring the importance of internal consensus and external alliance support in shaping the party's path forward.
