Bihar Cabinet Greenlights Major International Airport Project in Sonepur
The state cabinet of Bihar, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has officially approved the development of a significant international airport in Sonepur, located within the Saran district. This decision, made during a cabinet meeting on Friday, marks a pivotal step forward for the region's aviation infrastructure.
Key Features and Specifications of the Proposed Airport
The proposed airport will boast an impressive 4,200-metre runway, specifically designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft, including the massive Airbus A380. According to official sources, this extensive runway length will facilitate smooth landings and take-offs for large planes, enhancing operational efficiency.
Spanning a vast area of 4,228 acres, the airport is slated to be constructed between Hajipur and Dumaria. Upon completion, targeted for 2030, it is projected to become the largest airport in Bihar and rank among the biggest airports across India, significantly boosting the state's connectivity and economic prospects.
Project Approvals and Financial Allocations
The project has already received crucial approvals from the central government. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry granted site clearance, followed by an in-principle approval from the Centre. Additionally, the proposal was highlighted in the Union Budget, underscoring its national importance.
To support the initiative, the Bihar government has initiated the land acquisition process and allocated a substantial sum of Rs 1,302 crore specifically for this purpose. This financial commitment demonstrates the state's dedication to advancing this landmark infrastructure endeavor.
Enthusiasm and Impact on North Bihar
The cabinet's approval has generated considerable excitement and optimism in Saran and neighboring districts. Local communities and officials view the proposed airport as a transformative infrastructure project that will catalyze development in north Bihar, potentially attracting tourism, trade, and investment to the area.
Current and Future Aviation Infrastructure in Bihar
Bihar currently operates several airports, including the Jayprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, as well as facilities in Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnia. In addition to the Sonepur project, another major airport is under development at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district. Furthermore, there are plans to upgrade Darbhanga airport into an international hub to enhance both passenger and cargo operations, indicating a broader strategy to expand aviation capabilities across the state.
Additional Cabinet Approvals
During the same meeting, the cabinet addressed a total of 35 proposals from various departments. Among these, it sanctioned Rs 70 crore for anti-erosion work along an embankment in Bhagalpur district, specifically between Ismailpur and Bindtoli. This funding aims to repair an 80-metre breach that occurred during last year's floods, which led to extensive inundation in the surrounding areas.
