BJP MLA Ashok Lahiri Slams Mamata Banerjee's Budget Criticism, Demands State Development Blueprint
BJP MLA and economist Ashok Lahiri launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday, questioning her persistent criticism of the Union Budget without presenting any concrete alternative plans for the state's progress. Lahiri, representing the Balurghat constituency, expressed no surprise at the Chief Minister's remarks, highlighting what he described as her tendency to deflect blame rather than take responsibility.
Constructive Criticism Lacking in CM's Budget Remarks, Says BJP Leader
In his critique, Lahiri emphasized the importance of constructive feedback, noting that while Banerjee frequently points out flaws in the Union Budget, she fails to specify what changes she would implement. "The purpose of the Union Budget is not to list what will be done for any particular state, but for the overall development of the country," he stated. "She keeps on saying there is nothing in the Budget. Then the question is what would she have done to change." This, according to Lahiri, underscores a broader pattern where the Chief Minister avoids accountability, a trait he likened to a swan emerging clean from muddy waters.
Healthcare and Industrial Concerns Raised by BJP MLA
Lahiri also raised pointed questions about specific state-level issues, starting with healthcare. He referenced the Budget's proposal to enhance health facilities in Kolkata, contrasting it with the situation in border districts like Balurghat. "People cross the border from Bangladesh and go to Vellore or Bangalore for treatment. I want to ask the TMC government what they have thought about boosting medical tourism in the state?" he inquired, suggesting a lack of strategic planning by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
Turning to industrial development, Lahiri lamented the decline of once-vibrant sectors, using Durgapur as an example. "Durgapur was an industrial corridor. It was a vibrant industrial sector. See, what have they done. They are making temples…" he remarked, implying misplaced priorities. He further challenged the Chief Minister on future industrial strategies, asking, "If by God's blessings, she comes to power again, then what will she do about the industries? Does she have a plan regarding the Dankuni-Surat freight corridor, which has been announced?"
Pattern of Blame-Shifting Highlighted in BJP's Critique
Concluding his remarks, Lahiri reiterated his lack of shock at Banerjee's Budget comments, attributing it to her consistent approach. "Have you ever seen her taking the blame for anything, and not blaming others," he questioned, adding, "This is a swan-like quality that she gets into muddy water, but comes out spotless clean." This metaphor encapsulated his view of the Chief Minister's political style, where criticism is directed outward without self-reflection or substantive alternatives for West Bengal's development.
