Demand to rename Salem Junction or Airport after T M Kaliyannan

Political leaders and community organisations in Namakkal came together on Saturday to honour a stalwart of Tamil Nadu's political history, sparking a fresh demand for a lasting tribute in the region.

Birth Anniversary Observance Sparks Renaming Demand

Members of the Congress party and various Kongu organisations gathered to mark the 105th birth anniversary of T M Kaliyannan, a respected figure who served the nation and state in multiple legislative capacities. The event was not merely a memorial but a platform for a significant civic demand. Participants unanimously called for the renaming of either the Salem Railway Junction or the Salem airport in honour of Kaliyannan's contributions.

Political Leaders Pay Homage to an "Untainted" Legacy

The ceremony saw prominent figures paying their respects. Namakkal MP VS Matheswaran and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee spokesman Dr PV Senthil were among those who offered floral tributes to a portrait of the late leader. In his address, Matheswaran highlighted the impeccable character of Kaliyannan, who served as a member of the Provisional Parliament of India, the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, and the state's legislative council.

"Kaliyannan, who held many positions at the national and state levels in politics, had untainted hands," stated Matheswaran. He presented the late leader as a model for contemporary politics, adding, "If all politicians follow Ayya's style, they will be able to follow clean politics and serve the people."

Parliamentary Push for the Renaming Proposal

Moving beyond ceremonial homage, the event translated into a concrete action plan. MP VS Matheswaran announced his commitment to formally escalate the community's demand to the highest forums. He declared that he would raise the issue in parliament, advocating for the central government to consider renaming either the Salem Railway Junction or the Salem airport after T M Kaliyannan. This pledge adds a new chapter to the ongoing efforts to recognise regional leaders who have contributed significantly to India's democratic fabric.

The observance served as a dual reminder: of the enduring legacy of a political figure known for his integrity, and of the public's desire to see such service memorialised in prominent public infrastructure, ensuring his name remains part of the region's daily narrative.
