Protests have intensified in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, following the tragic death of a 19-year-old Dalit college student, with the accused teacher stating he is prepared to face consequences if found guilty in the ongoing investigation.
The Tragic Incident and Allegations
The young woman, a first-year student for the 2024-2025 session, passed away while receiving treatment in Ludhiana in December. Her family has leveled grave accusations, claiming she was subjected to ragging, physical assault, and sexual harassment at her college. They assert this led to severe mental trauma and a decline in her health, ultimately resulting in her death.
Accused Teacher's Defense and Cooperation
The accused teacher, Ashok Kumar, addressed the serious allegations. "These allegations are very serious, and an investigation is currently in progress. If I am found guilty, I should face the consequences. I am prepared for this," Kumar stated. With over 26.5 years of teaching experience, he expressed shock at the accusations, calling it a stain on his reputation borne from "destiny or karma." He confirmed he has obtained anticipatory bail and pledged full cooperation with authorities.
Regarding his suspension by the government, Kumar said, "The government suspended me, likely believing I deserved it, and I accept that. Suspension allows for an impartial investigation. The girl should get justice, and I should too."
College Clarification and Official Response
Government College Dharamshala Principal Rakesh Pathania clarified the student's academic status. He explained that while she attended some second-year classes in the new session, her results showed she had failed three subjects and was required to repeat first year. "She didn't do this. We cannot call her our student now, since she didn't take admission," Pathania said. The college learned of the incident only on December 22 when police arrived for investigation.
Pathania emphasized the college's cooperation, noting the presence of anti-ragging and harassment committees, and stated that all concerned students and staff, including three second-year BA students named in the FIR, have provided statements.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed preliminary action, including the professor's suspension and the formation of an inquiry committee. "Strict action will be taken against whoever is found responsible," he assured. The police have registered a case, and investigations are ongoing.
Political Pressure and Demands for Justice
The incident has sparked significant political reaction. A CPI(M) delegation met Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari in Shimla, demanding a fair and impartial inquiry by a senior officer. State Secretary Sanjay Chauhan expressed deep concern over rising atrocities against women and Dalits, urging a deeper probe despite cases already being registered.
The student's death has triggered sustained protests in Dharamshala, with family members and political groups demanding accountability and swift justice, keeping the issue at the forefront of public discourse in the state.
