Karnataka Farmer Stages Dramatic 'Death Ceremony' Protest Over Delayed Compensation
In a desperate and symbolic act of protest, a distressed farmer from Tarikere in Chikkamagaluru district has invited government officials to attend his own death rituals to highlight his prolonged struggle for fair compensation. Farmer Vishu Kumar sent out formal invitations for his "death ceremony" on Monday, scheduling a condolence meeting at 10 am followed by lunch at noon, as a stark reminder of his plight.
Land Acquisition and Compensation Dispute
Kumar parted with his 1.5-acre land several years ago for national highway development projects, but he received what he claims was meagre and unscientific compensation. The land, which he had cultivated with valuable sandalwood trees, was assessed by authorities at a lower payout rate. However, a local court later intervened, ordering a higher compensation amount for each tree based on a more accurate valuation.
Allegations of Bribery and Official Inaction
Despite the clear court directive, officials have failed to comply with the order, according to Kumar. He further alleges that some officials even demanded a bribe when he approached them to secure the rightful compensation amount. Frustrated by the persistent inaction and bureaucratic delays, Kumar escalated the matter by writing to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking permission for euthanasia as a last resort.
Speaking to media outlets, Kumar detailed his ordeal:- His land was officially notified for acquisition in 2017.
- He was not provided with scientific or adequate compensation, forcing him to seek legal recourse.
- Even after the court's favorable order, the compensation process remains stalled.
