Opposition leader Yuri Alemao launched a sharp attack on the Goa government on Wednesday. He said the rising crime graph is seriously damaging the state's image. Alemao described the current situation as 'jungle raj' in Goa.
Murders and Rapes on the Rise
Yuri Alemao pointed to alarming statistics. He stated that murders and rapes have increased significantly over the last five years. According to him, the chief minister has no proper answers for this disturbing trend.
The opposition leader expressed deep concern. He said criminals and murderers are now coming to Goa because they feel safe here. Alemao believes there is no real deterrence for lawbreakers in the state.
Government Focus on Land Conversion
Alemao accused the government of being distracted. He claimed the administration remains overly focused on land conversion issues. Meanwhile, he argued, law and order is being neglected.
He cited a specific case to highlight his point. Alemao mentioned the murder of 63-year-old Umakhant Khot in Pernem. The elderly man was allegedly killed because he objected to hill cutting on tenanted land.
Drug Trade and Local Involvement
The opposition leader also raised the issue of drug sales. He said he directly questioned the chief minister about this problem. Alemao remarked that Goa does not have 'Ram Rajya' but rather 'jungle raj'.
He found it particularly shocking that locals are involved in these illegal activities. Previously, the government blamed migrants for the drug trade. Alemao's comments suggest the problem is more widespread.
Home Department's Failure
Yuri Alemao did not mince words about the home department. He declared that the department has completely failed in its duties. The opposition leader emphasized that public safety should be the top priority.
Birch Club Fire Discussion Avoided
Alemao criticized the government for another reason. He said officials repeatedly rebuffed attempts to discuss a major fire. The blaze broke out at the 'Birch by Romeo Lane' club in Arpora.
According to the opposition leader, the government keeps running away from this discussion. He noted that the matter was postponed to Friday. Alemao said this shows the government's lack of seriousness.
He expressed frustration that the administration does not want to discuss the Birch tragedy in the House. Alemao believes this is a very important issue that deserves immediate attention.
The opposition leader's comments highlight growing concerns about governance in Goa. His strong words reflect mounting pressure on the state government to address these critical issues.
