Haryana CM Saini praises Punjab's 'Soorma' drive, seeks stronger action

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Sunday expressed concern over the growing drug menace in Punjab, urging the state government to take stronger action against those responsible for spreading narcotics. Speaking to the media in Ludhiana, Saini praised the Punjab Government's recently launched 'Soorma' (warrior) campaign, which honours individuals who have quit drugs. However, he stressed that the government must also disclose what steps had been taken to punish drug peddlers.

Saini calls for transparency on anti-drug actions

'It's good that people who shunned drugs were given the 'Soorma' tag, but the government should also reveal what efforts were made to punish those spreading the drug menace. If any steps were taken in the past four years to eliminate drugs, they should be made public,' Saini said. He warned that drug abuse was rapidly increasing in Punjab, causing immense hardship to families and worsening the law and order situation.

Punjab CM launches 'Soorma' campaign

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann launched the 'Soorma' campaign on Saturday, calling it the next phase in the state's anti-drug movement. The campaign aims to recognize and encourage those who have successfully overcome drug addiction. Saini's remarks came a day after the launch, as he questioned the effectiveness of the campaign without parallel punitive measures against drug suppliers.

Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' cited as inspiration

Speaking at a special programme at the Sutlej Club, Saini highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast, which, he said, inspired society by showcasing individuals working selflessly for the community. He also paid tribute to Sant Kabir Das on his birth anniversary, recalling his message of eliminating social evils.

Saini's comments underscore the ongoing concerns about drug abuse in Punjab, a state that has long grappled with a severe drug epidemic. The Haryana CM's call for stronger measures reflects a broader regional push for coordinated action against narcotics.
