Himachal: Mayoral polls in Dharamsala, Palampur on June 29

The stage is set for the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the municipal corporations of Dharamsala and Palampur, with the swearing-in of newly elected councillors and the election process scheduled for June 29.

Oath-Taking and Election Process

According to a government spokesperson, the newly elected councillors of both civic bodies will first be administered the oath of allegiance and faith in the Constitution of India. Following the oath-taking ceremony, elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be conducted, formally constituting the new municipal corporations and paving the way for the installation of their leadership.

Political Dynamics

The contests are expected to draw significant political attention as the recently concluded municipal elections produced decisive mandates in favour of rival political parties in the two urban local bodies.

In the 17-member Dharamsala Municipal Corporation, the BJP secured a comfortable majority by winning 11 seats. The Congress managed to win five seats, while one seat was bagged by an Independent candidate. With a clear numerical advantage, the BJP is poised to comfortably secure both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts.

On the other hand, the Congress emerged as the dominant force in the 15-member Municipal Corporation Palampur, winning 11 seats and leaving the BJP with just four. The Congress is therefore well placed to claim the top two positions in the civic body.

Significance of the Elections

The June 29 proceedings will mark the beginning of a new term for both municipal corporations. The elections are considered significant as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor play a crucial role in setting urban development priorities, overseeing civic infrastructure projects, improving sanitation services and ensuring the effective functioning of the municipal administration.
