Kolkata Mounted Police to Add Race Horses, Boosts Historic Unit's Strength
Kolkata Mounted Police to Add Race Horses, Boost Strength

The Kolkata Mounted Police plans to welcome up to four new race horses into its historic ranks soon. This move aims to bolster the unit's strength as it manages retirements and maintains operational fitness.

New Additions from the Racing World

Police sources confirm that the Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) might hand over four stallions, aged between seven and nine years. This transfer will occur at the end of the current racing season, likely in late February or early March. The Kolkata Police made a special request for these horses.

Current Strength and Challenges

Established in 1840, the Kolkata Mounted Police is the world's oldest mounted police unit. It currently has 59 horses, well below its sanctioned strength of 98. Each year, the unit typically sees about six horses either retire or pass away.

An officer stated, "Three to four horses are likely to retire at the end of this racing season." This ongoing attrition makes new inductions crucial for maintaining the unit's capabilities.

Recent History of Horse Inductions

The upcoming induction follows a similar addition just two and a half years ago. In 2024, the unit welcomed six racehorses, boosting its strength to 70, the highest in five years. Those horses, named Full Volume, Ghosht, Thiago, Insoko, Dubai Bay, and Bahuleyan, were aged five to seven.

However, deaths and retirements early this year reduced the count back to 59. The unit constantly balances new arrivals with natural departures.

Medical Tests and Training Plans

Officers emphasize that a final decision on the exact number of new horses will come after necessary medical tests in late February. "As the newly-inducted horses will join after active racing, we might find them suitable for equestrian events. But they will be trained again," explained an officer.

The Kolkata Mounted Police has adopted modern techniques in horse rearing and training. This includes a breeding programme at the Body Guard Lines Stable. Training durations vary for each horse, ensuring they meet the unit's rigorous standards.

Broader Procurement Efforts

In addition to the RCTC horses, the Bengal Police will send personnel to Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab later this week to procure more horses. They might buy around six to eight horses at one go. Not all horses will stay in Kolkata Police stables for long periods.

A medical board is being created to oversee the health of all horses. "This board undertook medical examinations of all horses. Another five horses maybe retired," said an officer, highlighting ongoing health assessments.

Operational Role of the Mounted Police

The Kolkata Mounted Police performs a range of law and order duties, though it does not handle night patrols. The addition of race horses could enhance their presence at public events and crowd control situations.

This strategic move reflects the unit's commitment to preserving its legacy while adapting to contemporary needs. The blend of historic tradition and modern training methods keeps the mounted police relevant in today's urban landscape.
