Congress Files Cybercrime Complaint Against Karnataka BJP Over Defamatory Social Media Posts

The political landscape in Karnataka has witnessed a significant escalation as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has initiated legal action against the state Bharatiya Janata Party's official social media presence. The KPCC lawyers' team has formally filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police Station in Bengaluru, leading to the registration of a case against the Karnataka BJP's X handle.

Allegations of Defamation and Misinformation

The complaint centers around a specific post published by the BJP Karnataka account that featured images of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and several other ministers. The post carried the provocative caption "Scam Lords" and accused the Congress-led government of systematically looting the state. According to the KPCC legal team, this content was deliberately designed to defame elected leaders and create social confusion through unsubstantiated allegations.

The Congress committee has argued that the post represents malicious content aimed at tarnishing reputations without providing any factual evidence or substantiation. They maintain that such misleading social media activity violates legal provisions concerning defamation and cybercrime.

Police Investigation Underway

Bengaluru police officials have confirmed to news agency ANI that they have accepted the complaint and registered a formal case based on the allegations presented by the Congress legal team. Authorities have indicated that a thorough investigation is now underway to examine the specific claims made in the complaint and determine whether any legal violations have occurred. The cybercrime unit will scrutinize the social media post in question and assess its compliance with relevant laws governing digital content.

BJP's Counter Allegations and Political Context

Meanwhile, Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra has intensified political pressure by demanding a comprehensive investigation into what he describes as a massive excise scam involving more than ₹6,000 crore. Speaking to media representatives in Bengaluru, Vijayendra insisted that either a sitting High Court judge or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should conduct this probe.

The BJP leader specifically called for the resignation of state excise minister Ramappa Timmapur, alleging involvement of the minister and his family members in the purported scam. Vijayendra accused the Siddaramaiah government of attempting to cover up the entire matter and creating unnecessary drama instead of addressing the allegations transparently.

In a coordinated political move, the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) are jointly staging protests near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha, targeting what they characterize as a "corrupt" Congress administration. This development occurs alongside other Bengaluru news items, including the Bengaluru International Film Festival controversy where actor Prakash Raj urged the Karnataka government to take a stand against banning Palestinian films, and the case against Kannada actor Mayur Patel for alleged drunk driving in the city.

The political confrontation between Karnataka's ruling Congress and opposition BJP has thus entered a new phase involving both legal proceedings through cybercrime channels and traditional protest politics, with Bengaluru serving as the central stage for these escalating tensions.
