KTR Clarifies BRS Position on Congress-CPI Alliance for Kothagudem Municipality

BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Sunday unequivocally stated that his party has no objections to the existing alliance between the Congress and the Communist Party of India (CPI) taking charge of the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation. Speaking at the Sant Sevalal Jayanti celebrations held at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad, KTR reiterated that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) sees no issue with a partnership between the two parties in this context.

BRS Aims for Collaboration with CPI for Singareni Workers

KTR emphasized that the BRS had initially sought to collaborate with the CPI specifically for the benefit of Singareni workers, highlighting a shared interest in their welfare. However, he expressed uncertainty regarding the motivations or external pressures that ultimately led the left party to join the Congress alliance instead. "We wanted to work with CPI for the Singareni workers' benefit, but we are unsure what pressures or reasons made them align with Congress," KTR remarked during his address.

Accusations Against Congress and BJP

In a sharp critique, KTR accused both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting the interests of Singareni workers, alleging that their actions are detrimental to the workers' well-being. He further claimed that in municipalities where no single party holds a clear majority, Congress leaders are actively causing disruptions by attempting to lure BRS corporators and councillors away from their party.

"In hung municipalities, disruptions are being caused by Congress leaders, who are enticing BRS corporators and councillors while intimidating them through police presence and goons sent to their homes," KTR asserted. Despite these alleged tactics, he maintained that BRS representatives remain steadfast and undeterred in their commitment to the party.

BRS's Broader Municipal Ambitions

The BRS leader confidently stated that their party intends to secure control of more municipalities across Telangana, signaling a strategic focus on expanding their influence at the local governance level. This declaration underscores the party's determination to strengthen its foothold in urban and semi-urban areas following the recent municipal elections.

Clarity Emerges on Kothagudem Mayor Post

Meanwhile, clarity has emerged regarding the leadership of the Kothagudem Municipal Corporation. The Congress and CPI have reached a consensus to share the positions of mayor and deputy mayor, with each party holding the mayor's post for two and a half years. According to the agreement, the CPI will assume the mayor's role for the initial two and a half-year term, followed by the Congress for the subsequent period.

Recent Election Results and Upcoming Vote

In the recent municipal elections for Kothagudem, the Congress alliance secured victory in 23 divisions, comprising 22 won by Congress and 1 by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). The CPI independently won 22 divisions, while the BRS captured 8, the BJP won 1, and Independents triumphed in 6 divisions. The election for the mayor and deputy mayor positions is scheduled to be held on Monday, marking a critical step in the formation of the new municipal administration.
