A devastating road accident near Karumathur in Madurai resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a young child, on Saturday evening. The collision involved a two-wheeler and a van, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region.

Details of the Fatal Collision

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 7:15 PM on the Madurai–Theni main road. A van transporting workers from a textile unit was proceeding from Madurai to Usilampatti when it attempted to take a right turn. Simultaneously, a motorcycle carrying three people was traveling in the opposite direction. The two vehicles collided head-on with tremendous force, throwing all three motorcycle occupants onto the roadside.

Victims Identified and Their Tragic Story

The deceased have been identified as Rajaguru, a 27-year-old construction worker from Karumathur; his seven-year-old niece Pramila; and their 29-year-old neighbor Sangeetha. Police revealed that Rajaguru had been raising Pramila, the daughter of his elder brother, due to challenging family circumstances.

On the fateful evening, Pramila fell ill, prompting Rajaguru to immediately take her to a hospital on his motorcycle. Sangeetha accompanied them, riding pillion to provide assistance during the medical emergency. Tragically, their journey for medical help ended in catastrophe just minutes from their destination.

Medical Response and Fatal Outcomes

The collision proved immediately fatal for Rajaguru, who died at the accident scene. Young Pramila sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where she succumbed to her wounds later that night. Sangeetha was initially taken to Usilampatti Government Hospital with serious injuries before being transferred to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for advanced care. Despite medical efforts, she passed away from her injuries on Sunday morning.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

Checkanurani police have registered a case against the van driver, identified as 43-year-old Pandi. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The case will examine factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, and potential traffic violations that may have contributed to this tragic loss of life.
